Observe the infant in interaction with others.
No elicitation needed, but the adult may introduce familiar games or toys to see if the infant anticipates what will happen.
The infant shows intentionality in vocalizations and crying (to get the adult to come). She anticipates being picked up and will raise her arms. The baby also shows excitement with familiar toys and games, anticipating what will happen next.
Help early childhood educators and parents understand that children learn the consequences of their behaviors from their first interactions with adults. The presence of a nurturing, responsive adult is critical to the infant’s sense of trust, security, and ability to anticipation what will happen.
