Observe the child trying to retrieve a desired object from a surface that is higher than her head level.
Place a preferred object on the coffee table or other low surface while the infant is watching.
The infant approaches the table, pulls up using hands, arms, and legs and retrieves the object.
Encourage parents to place objects on coffee tables and other low surfaces, such as a couch or chair, to encourage infants to pull to stand. Explain how pulling to stand involves upper and lower body muscles. Placement of toys and other materials is an easy way to encourage infants to build muscle strength and standing movement patterns.
