When the child is playing on the floor, watch her efforts to move toward desired toys or the adult. When the desired object is reached, watch what the child does.
Place familiar, desired cause-and-effect toys out of the child’s reach.
The child uses both large and small muscles to accomplish goals. Once the toy or person is reached, watch what the child does (e.g., activate the toy or indicate with gestures what is wanted from the adult).
Encourage early childhood educators and parents to let children develop autonomy and goal-directed actions by letting them “work” for the desired result. Instead of always handing the child what they want, tell her to get it (placing it so effort is required, but the child is not too frustrated).
