Vocalizes while looking at pictures in a book, catalog, newspaper, greeting card, etc.

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the adult and child looking at different types of pictures in various media.

Elicitation Strategy

The adult needs to comment about the pictures and give the child time to respond.

Behavior Observed

The infant looks at, pats or points to individual pictures and vocalize, as if commenting. With continued engagement the sharing involves turn-taking with both partners looking and listening.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to involve the infant in book reading and looking at pictures. Adults can show the infant ads, greeting cards, and catalogues that come in the mail. When the infant vocalizes, encourage adults to respond as if the child were talking about the picture. This builds the foundation for turn-taking in conversations.
