May kiss self in mirror

Situations for Observation of Skill

Watch after the baby’s bath when drying him off in front of the mirror or in the bedroom when child is dressing with a full length mirror.

Elicitation Strategy

Place the child in front of the mirror and bring the child’s attention to his image.

Behavior Observed

The infant looks at his image, leans forward and mouths or kisses the image, indicating recognition of a familiar face.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage mirror play with the infant next to different family members playing face games, putting on hats, etc. This encourages differentiation of self and others.
