Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child in a familiar environment where her toys are kept. Have toys out of the child’s reach but visible and accessible by crawling, or pulling to stand.

The child will scan the environment and seek out a preferred toy or object.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Let early childhood educators and parents know that children of this age have preferences for objects and toys. The desired objects are either something that is particularly attractive to one or more senses or something with which the child feels competent.
