Observe the infant during face-to-face interaction with an adult and during daily routines.

No elicitation needed.

Behavior Observed

The infant initiates vocal turn taking by coughing or making funny noises.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Help early childhood educators and parents understand the infant’s language development. They may not realize that combining strings of sounds is the infants attempt at making a “sentence.” Help parents realize the importance of responding to the child’s communications. This builds the foundation for a conversation.
