The infant uses jargon with a rising inflection or one word with a rising inflection (e.g., “Milk?” meaning “Can I have some milk?”)
Help parents recognize the rising intonation and that this indicates the child is asking a question that needs a response. Parents should not ignore attempts at communication, as this shuts the child down.
