Relates an object in a picture to something or someone in the real world

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child during daily routines and while sharing books with an adult.

Elicitation Strategy

The adult can ask questions that relate the pictures in books to real life objects. For example, “Show me your cup.”

Behavior Observed

The child recognizes and names some familiar objects and is able to point to them and name them in pictures as well.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to show the child pictures in the book and corresponding items that the child will recognize. For example, the cup, hat, pants, etc. in the picture are the same items on or near the child. Adults can take turns naming and making animal or other sounds when reading books where sounds can be added.
