Watch the child in play and in daily routines.
No elicitation is needed, but if a complex task is not observed naturally the adult can present a complex activity. Build with blocks, put shapes in a shape sorter, or play with an animal barn or other themed set.
The child persists in the complex task given adult support (i.e., follow the child’s lead, model actions, and comment on what he is doing.)
Help early childhood educators and parents understand that as children feel confident in their skills they need less external reinforcement.
