Looks to adult before doing something out-of-bounds

Situations for Observation of Skill

Watch the child as she explores the environment.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed.

Behavior Observed

The infant explores toys and the environment freely. When something new is encountered, she may see how the adult responds. The infant recognizes the adult’s “no” expression, but may do the action anyway. It is just too tempting!

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Parents should be encouraged to allow their child to explore within safe limits. Make suggestions for how to make the home baby safe. Encourage parents to stay close and watch as their child investigates and discovers new things. This will ensure that the child can “check in” and see the parents approval or disapproval.
