Throws temper tantrums to get own way

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe natural situations. Create a reason for frustration if necessary.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the adult to do whatever sets off a tantrum. (Tell the child to stop doing something, for example). Explain what you are trying to elicit prior to initiating this activity to ensure parents are comfortable.

Behavior Observed

Watch the child’s response to limit setting and see what strategies work to help the child calm. Try distraction, a favorite blanket or toy, or cuddling.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Having tantrums is typical for this age. Help parents learn how to help the child calm himself. Utilize whatever strategies were found to be useful in the assessment session.
