Observe the infant during face-to-face interaction with an adult and during daily routines.
No elicitation needed.
The child attempts to combine sounds to make a blend, but often deletes a sound. Many beginning or ending sounds may also be omitted.
The infant is now using words, but may not have the correct pronunciation. Sounds may be omitted in different parts of words. Encourage early childhood educators and parents to model the correct pronunciation, but not make the child feel like she is wrong. The child may begin to feel insecure in communication and decrease her efforts to talk.
