Listens attentively to sounds and words

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the infant in interaction with an adult with music and singing.

Elicitation Strategy

Once the infant is watching and moving her body to the music, ask the adult to introduce a new movement, such as raising arms to the rhythm.

Behavior Observed

The infant watches the adult’s mouth and body movements. When the adult adds a movement, the infant attempts a similar movement.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to do songs and dances with the infant. Introduce finger plays. Even though the child cannot yet reproduce the finger movements, she will attend and begin to initiate vocalizations and gross movements.
