Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child in play with the parent in the room.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the child, "Where is Grandma?" or "Where is Sam?" Use labels or names that are used frequently in the family and the child will recognize.

Behavior Observed

Ask the parent about the infant’s response to friends and relatives.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Help parents understand the attachment/separation process. The infant still needs the parent for comfort, so they like to know the parent is near. When the parent leaves, the infant becomes unsure and cries. This is just part of the process of the child learning he can be independent and still be fine. As he becomes more comfortable around others, he begins to trust others to care for him as well.
