Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child while playing on the floor with the parent in the room.

Elicitation Strategy

Place the infant a distance away from the parent with a variety of toys or materials.

Behavior Observed

The infant will move to be closer to the parent, sitting near her feet.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Discuss how children learn to separate from their parents. As they begin to sit and begin to crawl they can explore without the parent or familiar adult. However, the infant still needs the reassurance of the adult’s presence. She wants to be physically near the parent. Other people are becoming more interesting and children are particularly drawn to other young infants and young children. Exposure to others expands the child’s social understanding.
