Uses words “mama” and “dada” and maybe names of family members

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child with family members during daily routines.

Elicitation Strategy

Watch to see if the child uses names or approximations for parents and/or siblings.

Behavior Observed

The child uses terms for his parents and siblings and other frequently seen people.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to let their child help with daily activities. This provides an opportunity to label objects and increase vocabulary. Interaction during the activity can help develop turn-taking and sharing skills. The infant is also learning self-help skills that will contribute to later independence.
