Discriminates between voices and people

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child’s reaction to the parent’s voice versus another adult’s voice.

Elicitation Strategy

Place the infant on the floor with the parent and another adult interacting with the infant. Observe the child’s reaction toboth adults.

Behavior Observed

When the infant hears both voices, he turns more frequently to gaze at the parent.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to spend time talking, singing, and playing with their child. Opportunities to interact with people other than the parents are recommended. The infant will learn to differentiate the look, sound and feel of the parent.
