Observe the infant while being held in an enface position.

Behavior Observed

Observe the infant’s gaze as he studies the face. The infant will stare at the eyes, then slowly shift the gaze to focus on the hair.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Babies of this age have poor visual acuity. The world is very fuzzy. They do, however see shapes, lines, and colors. Impress upon parents the importance of holding the baby close to the face (8-10 inches) and talking to the baby. This is how the lines, shapes and colors of the world come together to have meaning. Babies prefer looking at faces because faces are composed of circular shapes, are symmetrical, and move.
