Situations for Observation of Skill

Have a dramatic play area for travel set up. Have a variety of different suitcases, clothing for different weather (coats, bathing suits, flip flops, boots, etc.). Have other travel materials as well (brush, comb, toothbrush, tooth paste, etc.). Plan for 3-4 children to play at a time. Have travel brochures and “tickets” to sell them. Recreate this area for this age group. Have coins and bills of play money to pay for the ticket.

Elicitation Strategy

As described above, the adult can be the travel agent. Discuss when the child wants to travel in terms of holiday, day of the week, time of the day etc. Have the child pay with six bills and six coins.

Behavior Observed

Children create equal amounts of bills and coins.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Dramatic play is critical as it enables children to use their concepts in a meaningful way. Children will also generate their own ideas about activities to add to the scenarios.
