During playtime use a shape stacker, where the child stacks different shapes of different sizes, or shape blocks with shapes of different sizes.
No elicitation may be needed. Dump out all of the shapes, so they are mixed up on the floor. If the child does not spontaneously group the shapes, the adult can suggest, “Let’s put all the ones that are alike together first, so we can find what we need when we build.”
The child will be able to group the shapes regardless of size.
Encourage parents to have shape toys for children to explore.
