Places circle, square, triangle in puzzle

24-27 Months

Matches basic shapes of different sizes

27-30 Months

Matches basic shape blocks with different orientation

30-33 Months

Stacks rings (or other objects in the correct order)

Identifies familiar objects by feel

Places shapes, even after puzzle board is rotated

33-36 Months

Sorts basic shapes

Recognizes and names typical circle, square, triangle

May name rectangle, but may confuse other shapes and call them rectangles

36-42 Months

Matches familiar shapes of different sizes and orientation

Matches rectangles

42-48 Months

Recognizes and names variations of the circle, square, triangle, and rectangle

Matches combinations of shapes to each other

48-54 Months

Sorts a wide variety of shapes

May not differentiate sides and corners, for example in puzzles and shapes

Recognizes variations in triangles, but usually does not recognize diamonds

54-60 Months

Recreates a picture or pattern using shapes

Recognizes a wide range of rectangular shapes, with varying sizes and orientations

Counts sides of a shape to identify the geometric configuration

Recognizes and counts angles to the geometric configuration

Recognizes basic shapes and typical hexagon, rhombus, and trapezoid

: Identifies and describes a variety of 2-dimensional shapes with mathematical names (ball/sphere, can/ cylinder) regardless of orientation and size
