Consistently makes the sounds of the parent’s language

Situations for Observation of Skill

Listen to the sounds the infant makes in interaction with the parent.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed. If desired the adult can talk to the infant and try to start a “conversation.”

Behavior Observed

The infant’s sounds are all part of the repertoire of the parent.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Explain to parents that infants can initially make the sounds of all languages. But as they hear the parents’ communication, they lose the sounds they never hear. Thus they are primed to learn the specific sounds of their culture.
