Lifts legs for diapering and dressing

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the infant during diapering.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation is needed during diapering. Before or after diapering the adult places a hat on the infant’s head.

Behavior Observed

The child anticipates the sequence of actions in diapering and cooperates by lifting his legs.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Infants now have more strength in and control over their lower limbs. Parents may not notice the infant’s efforts, so point out how the infant anticipates the adult’s actions and participates. Taking off the hat is a first step for dressing one’s self.
