Observe with another infant of the same age or older if possible.

Place the infants on the floor near, but not right next to each other.

The infant will observe and then move toward the other infant.

Discuss how children learn to separate from their parents. As they begin to sit and begin to crawl they can explore without the parent or familiar adult. However, the infant still needs the reassurance of the adult’s presence. She wants to be physically near the parent. Other people are becoming more interesting and children are particularly drawn to other young infants and young children. Exposure to others expands the child’s social understanding.
