Shows intense interest in speech sounds and music

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the infant in interaction with an adult with music and singing.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the adult to sing a familiar simple song or finger play to the child.

Behavior Observed

Most children attend with interest and react with body movements and use sounds or words from the song.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to sing and do finger plays with the child. Words are said with the rhythm and inflection, which helps the child break down the words into patterns she can more easily imitate. This type of playful interaction encourages speech production as well as music appreciation.
